The Captain of the SSN-703 was a Commander (O5). The Executive Officer (XO) was a Lieutenant Commander (O4).

(Note: The ship's organization, as well as ratings themselves, are firmly rooted in flux. Meaning, they're subject to constant change. Besides the organizational structure itself, ratings are being combined and in some cases renamed. For example, over the life of the SSN-703 Torpedoman rate was combined with Machinist Mate, and Quartermaster and Radioman was combined with Electronic Technician)

The crew was made up of 13 officers, 15 Chief Petty Officers (CPOs) and about 90-97 enlisted rates. Very few crewmembers were not Petty Officers (PO's); perhaps a half dozen.

There were four Department Heads:

Engineering
Navigation/Operations
Weapons
Supply.

The first three typically started as Lieutenant (LT), and were promoted during their tour to Lieutenant Commander (LCDR). Junior officers (JO's) started as Ensign and were promoted through Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) to LT during their tour (which was nominally three years).

The Supply Officer (Suppo) was a JO.

Engineering: Usually 5 Division Officers (DO), all JOs:

Nuclear: M-div (mechanics), E-div (electricians), RC div (nuclear electronics techs), RL div (water chemists and radiological controls, usually mechanics).

Non nuclear: A-div, (mechanics) and IC div (interior communications). IC div later transferred to OPS.

OPS/NAV: Usually 1 DO -Radiomen, Electronics Technicians, Quartermasters.

Weapons- Usually 2 Division Officers-Torpedomen, Sonar techs, Fire Control Technicians, Deck (made up of non ratings from all divisions, very few).

Supply: Mess Management Specialists and Storekeepers

Admin (XO heads it up): Yeoman and one Corpsman

The JOs rotated between departments, needing a minimum of one year in Engineering. They were assigned where the need existed. Strong Chiefs sometimes were designated Division Officers in small divisions.

Key CPO jobs: Chief of the Boat (COB), Bull Nuke, Assistant Navigator, M and A LPOs, Sonar LPO, Deck LPO (usually collateral to the COB), DOC (the independent duty Hospital Corpsman).

The JOs were there to qualify and to fight the ship. The ship was organized by the department heads and run by the CPOs.
