All of a sudden while reading a novel, (historical-naval-Civil War) I got to thinking about the very first time I got underway aboard USS Boston. It was only for a short deployment down to the Caribbean, but there I was, standing at quarters, aboard a United States Navy Ship of War, getting underway for the very first time. I had only been aboard a couple of weeks, and I wondered if I would get seasick (I didn't), if I could get used to underway watches (I did), and a whole bunch of feelings of awe, confusion, and anticipation of just what, I didn't know. Does anybody else remember their feelings as they got underway for the first time?
Also when we got underway for Vietnam for the first deployment. Wow! We are actually going to do what this ship was designed for...we are going in harm's way.
And what about you bubbleheads the first time they pulled the plug for real?
