I received email tonight from a friend of Terry Ferguson (TERRY1T) who has posted here many times.

Terry was involved in a car accident and died as a result of that accident. He didn't suffer. I was told that it happened so quickly that he probably didn't even know he was in an accident.

A moment of silence for our Shipmate Terry...

Eternal Father, strong to save...

Our Shipmate John J. Nicoll has gone ashore for the last time. John and his family attended 11 reunions. We got to know his sons through the reunions.

There's a guest book on line where you can leave a message of comfort, for those of you who knew John.

Chief Master At Arms

My brother came up north for a day and brought me this obit from the Grand Rapids Press:
Anthony J.Marsiglia, aged 66,passed away after a bout with cancer on August 26th.He was aboard the USS Boston from 1960-1962.
I am sorry to say that I did not know he lived in Grand Rapids or he could have joined Skip and I in toasting old times.

Mr. Anthony J. Marsiglia, aged 66, went to be with his heavenly Father Tuesday, August 26, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on February 17, 1942 to Joseph and Loraine Marsiglia who preceded him in death. Tony proudly served our country in the United Stated Navy aboard the USS Boston from 1960-1962. He was employed by the CSX Railroad and retired in 2002 after 36 years of service. Tony will be dearly missed by his wife of 45 years, Maureen (nee Gardner) Marsiglia; children, Joseph (Kris) of Gaylord, MI, Morris, Tony (Breanne), all of Grand Rapids; his four grandchildren; two brothers, Peter (Charlene) Marsiglia, Dr. Gary (Dotti) Marsiglia; several nieces and nephews.The Mass of Christian Burial and Committal Service will be celebrated Friday 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, please meet at the church. Interment Rosedale Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors Thursday 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Arsulowicz Brothers, West Mortuary, 585 Stocking NW, where a Rosary will be prayed Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions to Consolata Missionary Sisters or Hospice In Home Solutions will be appreciated.

Hank Houghtaling went in for a triple bypass and valve replacement last week. He didn't make it.

Hank was aboard with me, 1958-1960. He was a DC3 in R-Division.

He had retired as a 30-year firefighter in Lansing, MI.

He attended the Portland reunion and was one of the smilingest Shipmates there.

Samuel L. Marang (EN2 1955-1957) died just before Christmas, of esophageal cancer.

Sam was a Plankowner on the CAG-1 and a Life Member of the USS BOSTON Shipmates. He was an avid ham radio operator, and years ago he organized a USS BOSTON ham net.

LT Carter was our Fire Control Officer 1959-1961. He was unique. He was a Sailor and a scientist who understood---better than most---the complexity of Fire Control circuitry and concepts.

EDWARD W. CARTER, III Rear Admiral, US Navy (Ret.) Rear Admiral Edward W. Carter, III USN (Ret.) age 81, of Virginia Beach, VA died on August 8, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Billie, and his children, Betsy Williams and husband David of Manassas, Va., Michael and wife Eugenia of Madison, WI, Patrick and wife Nancy of Moscow, ID, and Rebecca Riordan and husband Stephen of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Elisabeth Williams and husband, Cliff Gross, Nathan Williams, Matthew Carter, Andrew Carter, Ari Carter, Ilan Carter, Shannon, Joseph and Thomas Riordan; and a great granddaughter, Charlotte Williams-Gross.

A native North Carolinian, he enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and entered the U.S. Naval Academy with a fleet appointment, Class of 1951. At sea, he served in the ship's company of seven surface combatants and commanded USS Towers (DDG 9), USS Biddle (CG34), Cruiser-Destroyer Group Three, Task Force 35, Task Force 75, and the Operational Test and Evaluation Force. Ashore he served on the staffs of Chief of Naval Operations,the Chief of Naval Material, the Commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command and as Inspector General of the Navy. He held a Master of Science degree from MIT, and was a graduate of the Naval War College and the Air War College. He retired as a Rear Admiral in l985.

He participated in seven Vietnamese War campaigns while in command of USS Towers and USS Biddle. When in command of USS Towers, which deployed as an escort to the Battleship USS New Jersey, she conducted more than 150 gun strike and fire support missions along the Vietnamese east and west coasts and rescued two downed Marine aviators. When he commanded USS Biddle she destroyed 15 enemy aircraft, and directed the rescue of 17 Navy, Marine, and Air Force aviators shot down in combat. In 1980 while he commanded Task Force 75, the ships of that Force rescued more than 650 Vietnamese "Boat People" refugees and transported them to safe haven ashore.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (four awards), Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Navy Distinguished Service Order, two Navy Unit Commendation awards, two Meritorious Unit Commendation awards, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation with Gallantry Cross. In June, l989, "Carter Hall", located at the Naval Guided Missile School in Dam Neck, VA, was named in his honor.

In retirement he was a Senior Fellow with the Center for Naval Analysis. He volunteered as a math mentor for students in Fairfax Co., VA. He continued his love of singing from days with the Naval Academy Choir to various church choirs at duty stations around the country. He was member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held there on August 14, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Burial with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on December 8, 2010, at 3 p.m.

Captain Lefteris Lavrakas

Captain Lefteris "Lefty" Lavrakas died 7/21 at his home in Newport, Oregon.

Lefty was XO of the CAG-1 1960-1961. He had a long, eventful Navy career.

Captain Lefteris Lavrakas was born in Watertown MA. October, 18th. 1919. He entered the Naval Academy as a Midshipman June, 6th, 1939 and graduated June 18th. 1942. June 19th. 1942 he was commissioned as Ensign in the US Navy. He was first assigned to the USS Eberle (DD430), escorting convoys in North the Atlantic and patrolling in Caribbean and south Atlantic hunting U-Boats. He participated in North African invasion and later, the invasion at Anzio Beach., then was transferred to the USS Aaron Ward, (DM34), at long Beach, CA., at which time he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, (Ltjg). The Ward participated in Okinawa invasion and was hit by 6 Kamikazes while on picket station. The USS Little (DD803) and two LSM’s (Medium Landing Ship), sunk in same attacks. Ward was towed to Kerama Recco for preliminary repairs and assigned to the Brooklyn Navy yard for full repairs. In 1945 he was promoted to Lieutenant, (Lt). Ward had made it to Brooklyn on one engine, one shaft, and a SOA of 5 knots. From Ward he was assigned to the USS Mansfield (DD729) as XO and navigator. The tour covered a year on occupation duty in China and Japan area, carrying more mail than ammo, since Mansfield ran a mail run from Sasebo to Tsingtao to Shanghai to Hong Kong and Okinawa where most of our troops were stationed. From the Mansfield he was assigned to command the USS Wheatear, (AM390), a 220 foot Minesweeper, based out of Charleston, SC. Sad remembrance when the Wheatear was ordered to stand by to assist in search-rescue mission the night that Hambleton (DD455) was cut in two by the USS Wasp (CV18), resulting a very high loss of life. Since Wheatear carried a 5,000 fathom roll off wire on her fantail, she served a number of towing assignments, including a target for the USS Wisconsin's and Her 16" guns. From the Wheatear he was assigned to the Department of Seamanship and Navigation. In 1949 Captain Lavrakas promoted Lieutenant Commander, (Lcdr)., and in 1954, he was Cdr. In 1962 he was promoted to Capt. and in 1970 retired.

Captain Lefteris has the following Citations, Bronze Star with one gold star, Presidential Unit Citation with Combat "V", Asiatic-Pacifie with one star, European Theater with two stars, United Nations, American Theater, Navy occupation-China, American Defence, World war II Victory, China Service, Korean Service with three stars, Vietnam Service, Orde Van Oranje-Nassau.

Captain Lavrakas has a Master of Arts from the California State University and a Ph.D. in Education from Claremont Graduate University and is also fluent in the French, Dutch and Greek Languges.

Captain Lavrakas married Billye J Charleville in Long Beach June 1945, and they have one son, John and three daughters, Paula, Char-Lee, and Debbie.

Bob Kelm (CYN 1943-1946) was the Captain's Yeoman on CA-69 through all of WW II. He lived in Toms River, NJ with his wife Kinney for over fifty years.

Bob attended the 1987 reunion and many more after that, until he lost Kinney and gradually lost his health. He was taken from us by cancer while living at the New Jersey Masonic Home.

Bob was a loyal Shipmate, a good friend, and a Brother. He will be missed.
