Posts: 1148 (04/11/09 07:59 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I just got off the phone with Ray's wife Sandy.....Ray passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last Tuesday morning [7 April]. Wasn't found until Thursday morning when his daughter came up to their cabin next door to where he was staying. Autopsy showed a massive blood clot in the heart. Mass and sevices will be Wednesday 10 am [15 April at funeral home in Grand Haven, Mi]. Will be back with more info as soon as I get it. My prayers are are with Sandy and their children right now. Ray and I corresponded via email, as well as this forum, for some time. As most of you know we were both QMs, so had a good deal in common even though Ray came aboard just after I left. We both served with Jim Ammon, and I have forwarded Wes' email to him. I finally got to meet Ray face to face in Memphis, and again last year in Portland. He was very proud of his service, and I particularly remember how animated he was during our bus tour of the Bath Iron Works. Today, I am very sad. Guy

Ray and I have been speaking each month since last year's reunion... I had been meaning to call him this past week for the Easter Holiday...I am sorry to say I did not make that call... I called Sandy this morning to let her know what Ray meant to all of us...He truly will be missed dearly by each and every one of us... Sandy plans to have Ray buried with his USS Boston cap...She knew what our ship and our organization mean to him... Posts: 661 (04/13/09 07:15 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Greetings shipmates, Yes, I just got the news myself last evening when Ray's daughter Michelle e-mailed me and I don't mind saying that I broke down after reading and rereading her message since it took so much time for the reality to sink in. As most of you know, Ray came to visit me here in Nevada for a few days back in February of last year, so I do feel fortunate that we had the opportunity to spend that one on one quality time together. I got to know him not just as a shipmate that I would have been proud to have served alongside, but as a bonafide older brother that I really admired and looked up to in many ways. I know he was supposed to go to the doc's on the 20th of this month to get his legs checked for clots. We got pizza and shot the breeze for a couple of hours. It was great to see him here and at two reunions. He was a true Shipmate, friend and buddy. He will be missed.

I suggested she log onto our forum to see the tributes to her dad. This is what she said to me in an e-mail yesterday::..."Thanks for letting me know. I did check out the sites you referred to. I was touched by all the kind words about my dad. I tried to reply on the Boston site, but it would not let my comment come through, as I was not "signed in". I presented a proposal to our org officers, and as a result, I just sent email to Myrna Hayes, under the subject heading "A Mare Island Tribute to Raymond Andersen": Basically, what I proposed is that the USS BOSTON Shipmates undertake a project to refurbish the main flagpole at the Mare Island Naval Cemetery.
