working at wallyworld, wearing my USS BOSTON hat and shirts. I get to meet all the ex-sailors in the area. One was Max Kleinertz (43-46) from New Jersey who live down here now. I also met Don Garrett who was on the USS FRANKLIN CV-13 on 19 March 1945 when she got clobbered. He was a snipe, something to do with after steering. After being trapped below decks for several hours because of all the fires, he, and some others, jumped off the ship. Later, after he was picked up. he was not allowed to go back on the ship. He finished the war on the USS HOOD. At first I thought he said the HULL, but she was lost in the typhoon. He gave me a patch from the 1991 reunion in Chicago. "THE SHIP THAT WOULDN'T DIE". TIM CAN MAN; what is the scoop on the HOOD? Small world indeed.

Jerry,if you google USS Hood,you will get the USS Mount Hood (AE11),which is the munition ship that exploded.Maybe it was

Ain't it funny - a couple of years ago on the USS Birmingham website, after wearing my USS Casimir Pulaski hat around Wilmington and greatly enjoying the
conversations and smiles I would not have enjoyed if I was NOT wearing the hat, I foolishly recommended that my shipmates go out and get a ballcap that
showed them to be a veteran. Immediately, some HTC ripped me a whole new rearend - from the safety of his keyboard, of course - accusing me of "expecting
a reward" for my military service. (Huh?
 )
Well, if enjoying the public smiling at me and nodding their heads instead of looking through me is a crime, I'm quite guilty. 
If wearing a veteran's hat makes unidentified veterans I meet in public say hello and share some of their stories - then again, I'm guilty as charged. 
Now, if was still a torpedoman, I'd have a few extra choice words for our Hull Tech Chief.........

I wouldn't go that far...buy a beer for a bubblehead? Hmmmm...I dunno...I did buy Bruce (remember him?) a drink last year,I think he got a shirley temple,or was it a pink squirrel? If you don't come to the reunion,maybe you could sell your hat on ebay?

There is something to be said for the Veteran's ball caps....My daughter gave me one for Xmas, and I have been approached by several other
veterans...I'm not looking for recognition, but as stated, it's nice to be recognized as a member of a select, although very large, group. We either
share some memories, or even just look at each other, nod, and silently acknowledge each other as a fellow member of a select group.

They allow Boatswains and even Quartermasters (yuk) to the reunions. Bubbleheads are welcome. Compared to the rest of us youse guys are young, but not very
many show up.

You guys "should" outnumber us "skimmers" but don't...YOU were the 'LAST' USS Boston and and I would think (if I still could) that your friendships would be quite new yet. I only know a few guys that come to the reunion from my era 1961-63,and I wish more would come also! Last year in Portland, we had prolly about 4 submariners at our table and Bruce got a picture of them,if he ever posts anything he could prolly tell you there names too! I would 'think' (there I go again),that all shipmates would want to try a reunion once just out of curiosity,to see if it was fun or not...are you afraid it will be fun? Maybe you will get 'hooked" into coming to another one (like I did)...by the way if you think I am badgering you AWOL guys,you are right,bite the bullet and come to one reunion and see what you think,we all would like to see you,and Wes really doesn't bite! (much)

Ray is correct. The bubbleheads should show up in great numbers. But I should talk as the old B Division doesn't have a large turnout either. But at
Portland some 6 new guys did show up. Hopefully they will come back. And as ray knows once you show up for a reunion you WILL want to come to more. It is habit
forming. Cleveland will be Ray's third and Luce Ruce will make her third.

Skip calls his new act "SKIPPER MANIA '09" he has been practising with some popular rock bands and hitting the
local pubs.Grand Rapids is definitly behind him leaving for Cleveland,they even offer him a chauffered (school) bus for his Entourage to use (or keep,if he
keeps going). There are posters around town that say "Flip Skip" on most telephone poles and he is getting pretty well know.If Don (aka; guitarget)
doesn't come to the reunion, our next TARGET should be our own SKIPPER! On a serious side...way to go Skip,you have done well for yourself since you and I
last had a brewski at the infamous 'Putt-Putts'.......... Bon Jovi to you!
