Doug Marsh has suffered a heart attack. Wes and Edgar made a road trip to Texas to see Doug after stopping off to see me in Alabama. They arrived Sunday afternoon and left Monday afternoon, after going to the Doctor's office with mewhile I had a cancerous bump removed from my forehead. I was talking to Doug several times as he checked their progress and then I got a call from him saying" their here, their here! He was very excited to see them. Several hours later, I got a call from Judy, Edgar's wife, that they were in the emergency room with Doug after he suffered a heart attack. I'll check again in the morning to see how he is doing. First Ray and now Doug.

Talked to Wes and Edgar several times today. As best as I can put it together, they had gone out to dinner and were returning to Doug's house. They were
following Doug when He put his turn signal on and went to the side of the road and hit a stop sign and stopped. They came running to Doug's car to find him
gasping for breath and then seemed to stop breathing. They started CPR on Doug and ajogger came by and stopped and he turned out to be a doctor and then
another person stopped who was a nurse. They continued CPR until the ambulance came and took Doug to the hospital. They ran several tersts to find out the
problem and then they operated on Doug. Edgar and Wes stayed at the hospital until 5 AM and then went to Doug's and got some sleep and returned to the
hospital. It seems that they found out what the problem was and operated. They think everything will be all right although Doug is in ICU. Needless to say,
both Wes and Edgar are both basket cases right now. If I hear anymore, or if anyone hears anymore, please post.

Thanks for your info my friend... I left a message on Doug's home phone for Paula to give me a call when time permits... I personally believe the good Lord put Wes, Edgar, the Doctor and the Nurse at that intersection all at the same time... I know we are all pulling and praying for Doug... God Bless... Walt |

Our prayers are with Doug and Paula!
And Jerry. I just re-read the top entry, and there's kind concern for you too, Shipmate. The big C is part of all our lives. Wes and Edgar, all the roads are washed out between FL and NH. Don't come up here, guys. (Just kidding.) The camaraderie displayed here is very heartwarming. Doug and I are active in country music and bluegrass forums. Doug has regular topics that he posts, so they all know him. Last night I let them know about Doug's condition. They all sent sincere best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.

An update guys. As Jerry stated Doug had a massive heart attack. Edgar and I stayed until this morning when Paula and one of her daughter's arrived. Doug
is on life support. He is not responsive to any pain stimuli. They have been running all sorts of tests and scans, but Prepare for the worst and pray for the
best is all I can tell you. Hopefully he will recover and attend some reunions. His vitals are stable but with no response the prognosis is grim. The last
words he said at the restaurant was "I liked my Army buddies, but I love the Boston guys." Edgar and I are now on our way back to Florida. Wesley

I spoke with Doug's daughter last night. There was no change. Everyone's praying for a spark. They thanked all of Doug's friends for the kind
concern and support.

I just spoke with Doug's wife Paula. Doug went ashore for the last time last night. He will be interred in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Vermont.
Final arrangements will be announced when they are ready.

Celebrate the life of Doug Marsh. He was a soldier and sailor, a policeman, husband and father. The town he lived in, Salado, Texas looks like a set for
western movies. Very quaint and pretty. He rented a nice house on the edge of town and Paula and he had the place decorated nice. When Edgar and I visited him
we had the greatist time laughing and carrying on. His last hours were happy ones. He will be missed and I will remember him. Wesley

It is a sad time for us shipmates...Another good friend and shipmate has left us.
Doug was quite a guy...He would always leave you smiling whenever you spoke to him...He will be sorely missed... I thank both Wes and Edgar for tagging along with Doug on his last "Liberty", I can just imagine the great time that they all had. I personally know that Paula felt the same way as well... I just found out about Doug yesterday thanks to Wes. (I lost my phone last week and have been out of touch with the real world) Doug and Paula came to visit
me last year over the fourth of July and we had the best time. Doug got to play bluegrass at the Shingdig on the Green and we went to eat bar-b-q and heard my
favorite bluegrass band, Balsam Range, play. We enjoyed being togeather and sharing lots of great stories. I am so glad that we had that time togeather. If
I knew how to post pictures on this forum I would post the ones I have of Doug from last year. My heart goes out to you, Paula and your family.

I concur Lucy, Walt and Wes...I never met Doug personally, but we chatted on the forum 'coffee chat room' and talked on the telephone many times. He
was my kind of guy....serious, but fun loving. He will be missed by family, friends, and all his shipmates. My heart goes out to Paula and the girls...God

Was very sorry to hear about Doug. When Edgar and Wes were at Jerry's here in Alabama, they called. Told me they were headed to Texas to see Doug and
told me about Ray. I hadn't been checking posts much due to being sick. Told them to stop by the "safe house " in Alabama on their way home.
Edgar told me they were on a mission for God---and it really was. SO glad they were there with him and God provided a dr and nurse to help them. Hope the
family knows we will be praying for their strength and guidance during this time,

I was stund and incredibly sad when I read on this site that Doug is gone. He was a shippy on my first ship. As a 20 year old ETRSN checking onto a huge ship
of the line, I was overwelmed. Doug, a little older and saltyer took the time to show me around and get me settled in. We spent many, many hours up in the 37
room BS' ing about literally any subject and playing guitars.That was 1965-66. I hadn't been in contact with him, since then until a little over a week
ago when I happened on this forum, saw his name and emailed him. We sent a couple of emails and were both looking forward to catching up and telling lies (sea
storys). He said he was happy to have another ET in the group. I was with Doug on what was probably his first gig! He, with his 12 string and I with an old 6.
We sang Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary numbers in a hole in the wall bar in Athens, New Years 1966! God bless you big guy! I wish we had a little more time.

Doug and I often talked and he told me that he had recently hooked up with a shipmate that he hadn't seen since his "Boston" days. I'm glad you had the opportunity to catch up with him a little bit before he left us. He was quite "The Man"... Shipmates...
In a recent conversation with Paula, I had requested she send me Doug's Obituary so we can share it here with his Shipmates... Douglas A. Marsh "A private service for Douglas A. Marsh, 69 of Salado will be held May, 17. Mr. Marsh died May 8, 2009 in a local hospital. Mr. Marsh was born to John S. Marsh and Flavia Seith in Cleveland, Ohio on December 2, 1939 He attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, VA and then went to Lybia with his father to explore for oil for the Lybian government. He served his country in two service branches, the Army and subsequently the Navy. He had two tours of duty with the Navy in Vietnam on board the USS Boston. An electronics specialist he received two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Pistol Shot Medal and Marksman award. After serving over 7 years, he left the Navy to return to Vermont and began his career in law enforcement. Served in the Vermont National Guard. He was a county sheriff, volunteer firefighter, and EMT before retiring. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Paula Marsh and two daughters, Dawn Marie and Lori Anne of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents. He loved bluegrass music and was known for his barbecue recipes. Burial will be with Military honors at a later date in Vermont at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Center, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
