NEWS FROM OUR FRIEND MYRNA AT MARE ISLAND | ||
Visit new St. Peter's Chapel Mare Island website

Dear Anthea and colleagues,
In a recent conversation with Elizabeth Pidgeon she remarked that the only hope she saw for the long-term preservation of St. Peter's Chapel is for the Chapel to be brought into the National Trust's properties. I couldn't agree more. And, many of our volunteers have expressed their agreement, too. So, as I was building our new website that makes every effort to begin to introduce the public to the beauty and special service to the Navy of St. Peter's Chapel, I have taken the liberty of making that suggestion and listing you as the contact for the Trust on our Chapel in Decline page (www.stpeterschapel.org). The website has been up just a week or so and already we have received many compliments. It has certainly been difficult to determine the best way to introduce the Chapel via the internet without stepping on toes. We have been reticent to launch a site until we were sure that the present tenant manager of the property was not intending to. Even in a recent site improvement, they do not tell the story of the Chapel or show any of its beauty. Our role as advocate voices in the absence of a defined St. Peter's congregation requires us to tell the story in as compelling a way as possible. We hope you will find the site useful in helping to make a case for St. Peter's amongst your circle of contacts.
I certainly welcome your suggestions and comments regarding improvements. It is a work in progress. I have not yet fully documented each window in the
collection within the website and since we have not had ready access to the chapel, the photos are generally not professional quality. They are also
taken in only available natural light as the opportunity to photograph quickly during a brief tour was possible. So, I feel that they don't do
justice to the collection. Yes, I am apologizing. However, we feel strongly about the need for the regional, national and world community to get a peek
at St. Peter's sooner than later. Too much time as already been allowed to pass by. For history alone, it is so important for a website to exist
where people can learn more about its role during its service to the Navy. Yet, just as importantly, the message of its decline and ways they can help
must be shared. This site could and should grow to be a vehicle for those with ties to the Chapel to tell their story and to meet each other.
Wouldn't it be fun for brides and grooms to reconnect with those they served in the Navy with or others married there? Wouldn't be exciting to
provide a way for photos and archives to be shared? That is our purpose, too. We think you do agree and welcome your support and thoughts.
In our dreams we envision the day when the Chapel is open on a regular basis for tours and just as importantly for services. More than ever before in our
history, this little chapel should be serving as a place of quiet contemplation and memorial. It should be a place to pay our respects for those who have
served our country in times of war and of peace. Weddings, funerals, baptisms and other ceremonies are certainly appropriate uses, too. But, this
community longs for the day when the Chapel will be so much more than a private rental hall. Our hearts and our souls ache for this beloved American
treasure, so vulnerable in its current status.
On behalf of my fellow Daffodil Tea volunteers, I welcome you to our website and of course, to our Tea. If you should be available Sunday, April 26th,
we would love to host you as our guest at one of our Tea seatings. We host a program of music and history in the Chapel preceding each Tea.
My warmest regards,
Myrna Hayes

I cannot pull them out either, but the slide show was moving. If I'm not mistaken, there are several slides with the BOSTON Memorial in them. We definitely
need to make Myrna a member of our Association.
I'm sticking with what I think I meant to say. |
