BOSTON received ten battle stars for her World War II service. BOSTON received the Navy Unit Commendation Medal for her naval gunfire support during the Battle of Dong Ha, May 1968. BOSTON received the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry for naval gunfire support and Sea Dragon Operations during the period 30 July-30 August 1968.

Combat action Ribbon 67/68/69 Navy Unit Commendation 68 Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation 67/68/69 Vietnam Service Medal 67/68/69 Republic Of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device 67/68/69 Everyone entitle to National Defense Medal/Good Conduct afer 4 Yrs honorable service. 1650 Master list also states: Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation, awarded to Commander Vietnam Forces, AND ALL SUBODINATE UNITS. I take that to mean USS BOSTON Task Force 77.1 Wes I never said "I'm an expert on everything Navy", I merely said "I'm an expert on everything". |

Jerry, didn't the Boston get some ribbons/awards for the 1967 Vietnam tour? I am probably wrong but I thought I read that somewhere.

Some time ago I found a Navy report that stated that the BOSTON earned ten battle stars for WW II and five more for her service in Vietnam.

Art, there were 17 campaigns during the Vietnam War,
From 16 Mar 1962- 28 Jan 1973 Boston participated in 5 or 6 or 7 ? Counter Offensive, Phase II 1 Jul 66- 31 May 67 Counter Offensive, Phase III 1 Jul 67- 27 Jan 68 Tet Offensive 30 Jan 68-1 Apr 68 Counter Offensive, Phase IV 2 Apr 68 - 30 Jun 68 Counter Offensive, Phase V 1 Jul 68-1 Nov 68 Tet 69/ counter Offense 23 Feb 69- 8 Jun 69 Summer Fall 1969 9 Jun 69-31 oct 69 If you participated in any one of these campaigns , your authorized to wear a bronze star on your Vietnam service Medal for each campaign. A bronze star denotes one campaign, a silver star denotes 5 campaigns. |

These are the Awards for the 703...
Boston was a much-decorated ship. The crew distinguished themselves on numerous occasions by meritorious service and outstanding performance. Awards included the Arleigh Burke Fleet Award and the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award, both of which are presented to one ship in the Pacific and one ship in the Atlantic. if you have not ordered replacement for your medals. I suggest you do so, and be patient.
I sent away for my one time replacement medals in Feb 2000 In Feb 2002, they sent me three, three were out of stock, one was issued by a foreign govt (not issued) today Feb 2009, I received a Navy E ribbon, and an updated 215, it states to delete, Vietnam Service Medal (2 bronze stars) Add: Vietnam service Medal (w/4 bronze stars), added Navy "E" award. What's that saying "better late than never".................. I'll let you know when they send the rest??? |

I too seny off....a very long time ago for replacement medals...and aftger well over a year, if not even longer, I finallygot the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy E,
Navy Commendation, Nat Defense, Navy Good COnduct and the Vietnam Service Medal and only two bronze stars. No Navy Piostol expert, nor any of the Vietnamese
medals..Besides the "Chicken Inspector" medal that everybody wowre, what were the others? Something about Civil Actions Palm or something. In
Killeen, right outside Fort Hood there are a gazillion surplus stores and I should be able to find those ribbons with not problem.
