'09 reunion not in the cards |
Lead | |
|
My other hobby is Studebakers, Yes old cars. The
Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet starts July 12, 2009. And I'm going to try and be there. It's in Iowa. We have a very active forum with
lots of Studebaker stuff discussed. Sorry guys, I was getting excited about the Reunion till I notice its about the same time.

I had a '62 Gran Turismo Hawk back in 1963. It's actually one of my all-time favorite cars.
Mine was white, with emerald green leather interior. Some of the best bucket seats I've ever owned. The dashboard instrument panel sort of wrapped around my "cockpit," with aircraft-like analog instruments monitoring everything. It had a nice little V8 (289, I think), three speed stick on the column with overdrive. In OD the engine was turning 2100 at 70mph. It gave me 25 mpg at that speed, 21mpg at 80. Wish I had it now.

Didn't Studebaker make a "Hawk" series of a sporty type car back in the late '50's?

STUDEBAKERS OR OLD SHIPMATES? | ||
|
Ebon, I am surprised that you haven't noticed how 'close' Iowa is to Ohio.....Why with a supercharged Golden Hawk, you could make the trip in 6-7 hours, maybe less!! I hate to see a shipmate miss out on the once a year festivities...didn't think you were gonna get away without a nutcracker did ya?

I occasionally worked at the Studebaker Lark dealer near my mother's house. A regional rep came in with an Avanti demonstrator one day. I grabbed it. There
was a new gauge on the dashboard, showing the output of the supercharger.
I had driven cars at 110 and 120... I pushed this one to where the speedo was showing 160 (it didn't go any higher). My knuckles were white, and my heart was racing. I'll never forget it. In later years I'd own fast cars---like my 67 Pontiac, which would do 105 in second gear (thanks to 2.39:1 rear end) and who knows what once the speedo was buried---but that Avanti was clearly something else.

I drove the 56 Commander sedan to Lancaster, Pa. to last Meeting in Sept. Had no trouble at all.
The last 4 months in the Navy, I was detached to Arm Force Service in Boston. So I know about AWOL. :-)

I bought a 50 Studebaker when I attended "A" School in Newport. It must have been 1960. LA BAMBA was a big hit, if I remember right. I used to sit in
it and practice my clutch work, just back and forth, back and forth. I did not have the money to register it so I sold it when I left. I think I paid $100.00
for it. It looked like a capital W in the front. I got pretty good on the clutch work. Then I had a 57 Hawk for a while, I think a 189 cu in engine with a
back draft carburater? That sound right?
