We just received this email from Paula Marsh:

Thank you for all the sacrifices that you have all made. Thank you for your communication and friendship to me in the death of my husband, a GREAT strong loving man, Douglas Arthur Marsh. He is missed tremendously. He loved his shipmates and what the USS Boston stood for.

Have a peaceful Veterans Day. I will light a candle for all of you. God Bless.

Welcome aboard shipmate. Thank you for your kind words in regard to Doug. Doug and I often talked and he told me that he had recently hooked up with a shipmate that he hadn't seen since his "Boston" days. I'm glad you had the opportunity to catch up with him a little bit before he left us. He was quite "The Man"...

I was stund and incredibly sad when I read on this site that Doug is gone. He was a shippy on my first ship. As a 20 year old ETRSN checking onto a huge ship of the line, I was overwelmed. Doug, a little older and saltyer took the time to show me around and get me settled in. We spent many, many hours up in the 37 room BS' ing about literally any subject and playing guitars.That was 1965-66. I hadn't been in contact with him, since then until a little over a week ago when I happened...

Was very sorry to hear about Doug. When Edgar and Wes were at Jerry's here in Alabama, they called. Told me they were headed to Texas to see Doug and told me about Ray. I hadn't been checking posts much due to being sick. Told them to stop by the "safe house " in Alabama on their way home. Edgar told me they were on a mission for God---and it really was. SO glad they were there with him and God provided a dr and nurse to help them. Hope the family knows we will be...

I concur Lucy, Walt and Wes...I never met Doug personally, but we chatted on the forum 'coffee chat room' and talked on the telephone many times. He was my kind of guy....serious, but fun loving. He will be missed by family, friends, and all his shipmates. My heart goes out to Paula and the girls...God Bless and smooth sailing....sailor, rest your oars.

I just found out about Doug yesterday thanks to Wes. (I lost my phone last week and have been out of touch with the real world) Doug and Paula came to visit me last year over the fourth of July and we had the best time. Doug got to play bluegrass at the Shingdig on the Green and we went to eat bar-b-q and heard my favorite bluegrass band, Balsam Range, play. We enjoyed being togeather and sharing lots of great stories. I am so glad that we had that time togeather. If I knew how to post...

It is a sad time for us shipmates...Another good friend and shipmate has left us.

Doug was quite a guy...He would always leave you smiling whenever you spoke to him...He will be sorely missed...

I thank both Wes and Edgar for tagging along with Doug on his last "Liberty", I can just imagine the great time that they all had. I personally know that Paula felt the same way as well...

It was my honor to have him as a shipmate and a true friend...

Celebrate the life of Doug Marsh. He was a soldier and sailor, a policeman, husband and father. The town he lived in, Salado, Texas looks like a set for western movies. Very quaint and pretty. He rented a nice house on the edge of town and Paula and he had the place decorated nice. When Edgar and I visited him we had the greatist time laughing and carrying on. His last hours were happy ones. He will be missed and I will remember him. Wesley

I just spoke with Doug's wife Paula. Doug went ashore for the last time last night. He will be interred in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Vermont. Final arrangements will be announced when they are ready.

An update guys. As Jerry stated Doug had a massive heart attack. Edgar and I stayed until this morning when Paula and one of her daughter's arrived. Doug is on life support. He is not responsive to any pain stimuli. They have been running all sorts of tests and scans, but Prepare for the worst and pray for the best is all I can tell you. Hopefully he will recover and attend some reunions. His vitals are stable but with no response the prognosis is grim. The last words he said at the...

Doug Marsh has suffered a heart attack. Wes and Edgar made a road trip to Texas to see Doug after stopping off to see me in Alabama. They arrived Sunday afternoon and left Monday afternoon, after going to the Doctor's office with mewhile I had a cancerous bump removed from my forehead. I was talking to Doug several times as he checked their progress and then I got a call from him saying" their here, their here! He was very excited to see them. Several hours later, I got a call...
