specially fitted (single shot) .50 cal, but that may have just been a story. Seems to me a .50 caliber bullet would travel a whole lot farther than a
hand-launched grenade - grenades are heavy!

			<description><![CDATA[ I think they should go back to the WWII &quot;Armed Guard&quot; program. A team of gunner&#39;s mates were assigned to each Merchie to man the 3 or 5 inch gun
mounted on the ship, and trained the civilian crew in case they were needed. I&#39;m not saying that a gun should be mounted on American flagged merchies, but
how about a squad of Navy men, trained in the uyse of small arms, and including at least one Ma Deuce 50 cal. They are sending our sailors all over the place
as augmentees, so how... ]]></description>

I was just reading more about the rescue...it seems that those &quot;pirates&quot; were a bunch of wannabes, only 16 or 17 years old.

Still, they were armed with automatic weapons; teenagers from a third world outhouse, armed like that is a sure fire recipe for disaster.  If for some reason,
the pirates who attempted to hijack the Maersk Alabama had been older, more experienced pirates, I wonder if the outcome would have been the same,

			<description><![CDATA[ One of the talking heads on TV briefly mentioned an international agreement that keeps commercial ships from carrying weaponry. Since I can&#39;t, after
thinking about it for a couple of weeks, come up with a good reason for such a policy, I&#39;d say let&#39;s either knock that down, or simply ignore it and
arm our US-owned ships (not that there are many of them).

a while now? In the Marines I had the pleasure of shooting the 50 caliber machine gun - in 1972 I was laying waste to targets said to be 2100 meters away in
Camp Pendleton, California - you can&#39;t tell me that one guy on the bow of any ship with a mounted 50 caliber couldn&#39;t keep 500 guys in rubber rafts at
